Pitchers Taylor, Bowers pace HU to twinbill sweep of Marian

Pitchers Drew Taylor and Mitch Bowers combined to give up just five hits on the day and led the Huntington University baseball team to a 10-1 and 6-3 sweep of host Marian College on Thursday, April 2.

While Taylor was limiting Marian to just two hits in the opener, his offense was scoring at least one run in each of the milddle five innings of the contest.

Travis Frantz broke open a 2-0 contest with a three-run home run to left in the third, and the Foresters added solo runs in the fourth and fifth before tacking on three more in the sixth.

Frantz finished with four runs batted in, and Edwin Rodriguez had three hits.

Even though Bowers allowed only three hits and just two earned runs in the nitecap, it took HU until the final inning to nail down the victory.

The Foresters, 14-11, were trailing 3-2 going into the seventh but used two run-scoring hits and a bases-load walk to win the contest.

Eric Harpring, whose single in the seventh tied the game at 2-all, had three hits and two RBI to lead HU. Former Huntington North star Andrew Drummond got the Foresters' lone extra-base hit of the contest, a leadoff home run in the fourth.

Jarod Hammel led off the top of the seventh for HU with a single, and one out later Eric Schultz beat out a bunt. After Harpring's single knotted the score at 3-all, Rodriguez received an intentional pass to load the bases.

Marian pitcher Ricky Parrish got Drummond on a liner to second for the second out, but Ryan Shell worked the bases-load walk to force in the game-winning run. Frantz plated the two insurance runs with a single.
