Foresters split softball doubleheader with Siena Heights

The Huntington University softball team split a doubleheader with host Siena Heights University on Thursday, March 26, taking the first contest 6-2 but falling in the second, 4-3.

In game one, HU, now 8-6, got a 14-strikeout performance from pitcher Lauren Ward, who went the full seven innings and gave up only three hits.

HU scored all it needed in the third inning. After a Brandi Gower single and two fielder's choices, Ashley McCann drove in both runners for a 2-0 lead. Ashley Scally followed up with a double, scoring McCann to finish off the scoring in the inning.

The Foresters tacked on two more in the fifth on a Brittany Gower double, a Brita Kuiper triple and a Scally single.

In the bottom of the inning, Siena Heights gained two runs back with the help of three Forester errors in the inning.

HU finished off its scoring by adding a run when Kristi Purvis, who was a pinch-runner after Scally's double, scored on a wild pitch.

In the second game, the Forester bats were still hot from game one. In the first inning, Megan Smith reached on an error and Brittney Bateman singled to move Smith to third. Smith scored on a wild pitch and Bateman advanced to third. Brittany Gower batted in a run and Ward and Scally both walked to load the bases. Following a force out at home, Janalee Boroff walked to push HU's third run across.

HU gave up three runs to Siena Heights in the third inning by giving up three singles and a homerun to tie the game. The Saints added one more run in the bottom of the six to finish off the Foresters.

Molly Long pitched five innings, giving up 10 hits and striking out six. Ward came into the game at the bottom of the sixth to take the loss for the Foresters.
