RYS starting up baseball

Roanoke Youth Sports (RYS) opened their baseball registrations from now until March 18. Any kids in Roanoke or the surrounding areas are welcome to play in the league for a small registration fee. The official season will beApril 22 through July 1.

RYS cancelled their 2020 season for both baseball and soccer because of COVID-19.

RYS Director John Nelson said, “It’s fun to see the kids come in as youngsters and then leave as teenagers.”
Nelson wasn’t sure how the numbers would be affected this year, but he hoped to see similar numbers as previous years.

“I think there’s a pent up demand we are seeing on Facebook and hearing in the community,” Nelson said. “People are interested and excited to get going again.”

Those involved with RYS are going to implement extra sanitizing as far as door handles, public areas and equipment to make it as safe as possible for all participants. Coaches will have sanitizing wipes available for any shared equipment.

The different baseball leagues available are separated as follows (use the player’s age as of May 1):

• T-ball for ages 4 to 5 is every Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m.

• Coaches pitch baseball for ages 6 through 8 is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with a maximum of two games a week.

• Sand lot minors baseball for ages 9 through 12 is Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with a maximum of two games a week.
