HN girls continue win streak

The Huntington North High School Lady Vikings basketball team picked up two wins at the Norwell High School Shootout on Saturday, Jan. 2.

Their first win was against Wawasee High School, 36-27.

Taylor Double led the way with 10 points, with Grace Gross coming in close behind to chip in seven.

Huntington and Wawasee started out the first quarter evenly matched, ending at the first quarter mark with six points each. Huntinton’s Kiana Jennings and Leah Campbell each provided a successful three-point shot, while Wawasee found success in three two-point shots each from Kennedy White, Becca Smith and Emily Haines.

It was after the first quarter that Huntington picked up the pace, gaining 11 points over Wawasee’s nine in quarter two, eight points compared to Wawasee’s seven in quarter three and 11 points compared to Wawasee’s five points in the final quarter.

This brought the Lady Vikes their sixth win in a row, moving their overall record to 8-4.

Next up was competition against Plymouth High School, resulting in a close 26-25 win.

Plymouth would have the lead at the end of the first quarter, gaining a total of eight points compared to Huntington’s five. Plymouth would gain their eight points with four members each gaining a successful two-point shot. Huntington’s five points would come at the hands of Double, making a successful two-point and three-point shot.

Huntington would pick up the pace to take the lead by the end of the second quarter, gaining eight points while Plymouth only gained three. This gave Huntington the lead by just four points. Plymouth would gain another 15 points by the end of the game, but it wasn’t enough to out-do the Vikings, who gained 13 points in the second half to clinch the 26-25 win. Double would again lead the way for HN, gaining 16 of the team’s points for the game.

This brought the Lady Vikings to their seventh consecutive win, a 9-4 record overall.
