Hummer Memorial Mile added to Heritage Days

The Hummer Memorial Mile is a new addition to Huntington Heritage Days 2020. Organized by the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA, the Hummer Memorial mile, a swimming event, will be held Saturday, June 20, at 1 p.m. at Lake Clare, located at the corner of Old U.S.-24 and Broadway.

The two open-water swim races will be presented by the YMCA with sponsors Live4Love and Ruble Triathlon and hosted by the Huntington Township Trustee. The Sprint Distance Race heats, up to 750 yards, will begin at 1 p.m. The additional Olympic Distance Race, 1 mile, in memory of Glen Hummer, former Y and Olympic swim coach and instructor, will also begin at 1 p.m. The races are open to adults age 18 and over.

An informational meeting for participants, community members and anyone wanting to volunteer for the event will be held Sunday, March 29, at 1 p.m. at the Parkview Huntington Family YM-CA, 1160W-500N. A reservation by those planning to attend would be appreciated, but is not necessary, to the Y at 359-9622.

Early check in for the Hummer Memorial Mile is Friday, June 19, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Lake Clare. Race day check in begins at 11:30 a.m., also at Lake Clare. The Y also invites those involved to walk in the Heritage Days parade in Hummer Memorial Mile T-shirts and then proceed to the event following.

Open-water swim practices will begin Sunday, May 10, and continue on Sunday, May 21, and Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m.

There is a fee charged to participate in the Hummer Memorial Mile. Proceeds go to funding the annual Hummer Memorial Mile and the Lake Clare Aquatics Programs in memory of Glen Hummer. The funds also support the current and upcoming USA Master swimmers such as Katie Blair, a local ultra-swimmer who crossed Lake Erie and will be swimming the coastline of St. Lucia in June 2020.

A unique logo for the Hummer Memorial Mile has been designed by the artist KristinA. Registration and waiver forms will soon be available at the Parkview Huntington Family YMCA. Although currently the Hummer Memorial Mile Open Water Race Events are in accordance with governing safety rules, regulations and plans, this year’s races are not sanctioned by USA Masters Swimming. Sanctioning for all future events is in progress.

Heritage Days is organized by a steering committee of the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce. The theme of Heritage Days 2020 is “The ’70s: 200 Years of Freedom” and the corporate sponsor is Duke Energy.
