Big New Haven third quarter dooms Vikes at sectional

Visiting New Haven blitzed the Huntington North boys’ varsity basketball team in the third quarter to end the Vikings season on Friday night, March 6, at the HNHS Basketball Sectional Tournament, 68-51.

After the teams traded the lead in the second quarter, New Haven finished the half on a small run to take a 36-28 lead into the intermission. The third quarter was all Bulldogs as they held a 20-7 advantage in the frame and went into the final quarter holding a 56-35 lead.

Zach Hubartt scored 16 points and Jordan Hollowell had 10 to lead the Vikings, who finish the season 9-15.

New Haven, 17-6, will face Homestead, 16-8, tonight in the sectional finals. Homestead thrashed Fort Wayne South Side, 84-63, in the semifinals in the second game Friday night.

The Vikings hit 21 of 48 shots from the floor for 43.7 percent for the contest. They hit 5 of 9 from the free-throw line for 55.6 percent.

Austin Oswalt had four assists and Hubartt added three. Hubartt also had two blocked shots.

Donovynn Lewis banged in 24 points to lead New Haven. Ja’kar Williams added 14 points, Thomas Latham had 13 and D’Andre Wright had 11.
