Foresters open baseball season with split in Tennessee

Senior Alex McCutcheon threw three-hit ball for 5.2 innings in the first game of a doubleheader split with host Bethel, of Tennessee, on Saturday, Feb. 15, to start its 2020 season.

The Foresters won the opener, 3-1, but got shaded in the second game, 2-1.

McCutcheon, a left-hander, fanned seven batters while walking just one to pick up the win. Camden Dice, a junior transfer, pitched 1.1 innings of hitless ball to pick up the save in his debut in Forester green.

The Foresters needed just two pitches to take control of the opener. Daniel Lichty launched an 0-1 pitch over the right field fence in the top of the first for the HU lead.

Eli Knust knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run with an RBO-double in the second inning.

Sam Kimmorley hit a sacrfice fly in the fifth inning up the HU lead to 3-0, but Nicholas Proto hit a solo homer in the bottom of the frame to get Bethel on the scoreboard.

Jarrett Gray finished with three of HU’s eight hits and scored two runs.

Bethel scored a run in the 12th inning to take the nightcap. HU scored its lone run in the first inning on an Ian McCutcheon double to right and Langston Ginder’s single. The hosts scored a solo run in the ninth inning to knot the score.

Mason Shinabery was the first of four Foresters on the mound and went the first six innings, yielding just two hits and a walk while striking out nine for a no-decision. Joey Butz and Dice spent the next five frames on the mounnd before Brent Turner  took the loss in the 12th.

Coach Mike Frame’s crew had 10 hits in the contest but left runners stranded in all but two frames. McCutcheon and Owen Young each had three hits while Gray had two more safeties.
