Rongos comes off HU bench to lead Foresters to win

Alaina Rongos came off the bench with a team-high 21 points to lead the Huntington University women’s basketball team past host Bethel, 84-75, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15.

Rongos, a freshman from Fort Wayne, nailed 10 of 15 shots from the field to lead five HU players in double figures. Dazia Drake had 13 points off the bench and starters Erin Mohr, Sam Hammel and Sarah Fryman each chipped in 10 as HU improved to 19-8 on the season, 8-7 in Crossroads League play.

Hammel actually pulled off the Foresters’ second triple-double in program history as she added 10 rebounds and 10 assists to her stat line. Fryman got the program’s first triple double two weeks earlier.

HU led after the first quarter, 16-15, but trailed by one at halftime, 37-36. The Foresters held a 62-59 lead after three frames.

The Foresters hit 38 of 72 shots from the field for 52.8 percent and notched 4 of 8 free throw tries for 50 percent. Bethel hit 24 of 59 from the field for 40.7 percent but added 17 of 21 from the foul stripe to keep things respectable.

The Pilots, 7-20 overall and 1-14 in the CL, were led by Savannah Feenstra with a game-high 24 points. Jessica Erwin added nine points.
