Platt, Middlesworth lead HU men to upset of No. 9 Bethel

Konner Platt and Caleb Middlesworth combined for 50 points to lead the Huntington University men’s basketball team to an 83-79 upset over No. 9 host Bethel University on Saturday, Feb. 15.

Klajd Kiri hit a shot from the lane to put HU up 68-67 with 8:07 left to play and the Foresters defended the lead like their lives depended upon it the rest of the way to knot their season record at 14-14, 6-10 in the Crossroads League.

Platt banged in 9 of 13 shots from the field, including 6 of 9 from downtown, for 26 points, and Middlesworth hit 10 of 15, including 4 of 5 from deep, on the way to 24 points to send Bethel to just its ninth loss against 19 wins.

With the pair leading the way, the Foresters’ fourth win in their last five games came on the strength of a superior shooting day as HU hit 34 of 59 from the field for 57.6 percent, including 13 of 25 from three-point land for 52 percent. The Foresters only went to the foul stripe six times, hitting two, for 33.3 percent.

TreVion Crews led the Pilots with 21 points. Keonte Jenkins and Gavin Rasler each had 12 points.

HU was up by eight points at 18-10 at the 15:57 mark in the first half, but Bethel took a 49-45 lead into halftime.

Peyton West scored 10 points, pulled down 10 rebounds, had four assists and three steals for HU. Kiri added 10 points and five rebounds off the HU bench.

Platt added five assists and Middlesworth four.

Bethel hit 28 of 72 shots from the field for 38.9 percent and added 9 of 13 from the free-throw line for 69.2 percent.
