Huntington North High School senior Cody McCune placed third at the New Haven Wrestling Semi-state on Saturday, Feb. 15, and earned a trip to the state meet this coming weekend.

McCune, 36-2, defeated Eli Hilger of Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger, 7-0, in the consolation finals to be one of the top four finishers at 152 pounds and thus punch his ticket to the state meet in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22.

McCune was edged by Ethan Mason of Tri-Central, 7-6, in the third round to drop to the consolation round. He started his day with a pin at 3:21 over Traydon Goodwin of Wabash, then he quicksixed Alec Mowery of Bellmont in just 46 seconds in the second round.

Aidan Hardcasle of Oak Hill wound up beating Mason, 6-5, to claim the weight class title.

Both the Vikings’ other two semi-state competitors went out in the first round. Brady Lewis at 113 pounds was pinned in 3:29 by Trey Sturgill of Peru, and Darryn Kuhl at 126 was beaten in a major decision, 8-0, by Payne Blackburn of Delta.
