Vikes rally big to force OT, but lose to South, 54-52

A furious fourth-quarter rally got the game into overtime but the Huntington North High School boys’ basketball team came up a little short in the extra frame in a 54-52 loss to host Fort Wayne South Side on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The Vikings, 6-13, trailed after three quarters of play, 48-35, but outscored the hosts 16-3 in the final frame to knot things at 41-all by the end of regulation. South, however, outscored the Vikes 3-1 in the extra period to pull out the win.

Jordan Hollowell scored 16 points, Sam Thompson had 15 and Zach Hubartt added 14 to lead the Vikes’ offense. Deven Newcomb had a season-best 11 assists.

South Side held a 12-9 lead after the first quarter and went into the half with a 27-22 lead.

Treveon Jones scored a game-high 21 points to lead South Side, 7-11. Ashton Johnson scored 14 points and Kamron Mitchell tossed in nine.

The Vikings hit 18 of 33 shots from the field for 54.5 percent, including nailing 10 of 14 from beyond the arc for 71.4 percent. They hit 6 of 8 free throw tries for 75 percent.

Thompson hit all five of his three-point shots to lead the Vikes’ efforts. Hollowell went 5 of 7 overall.

South Side hit 17 of 48 shots from the field for 35.4 percent and added 14 of 19 from the stripe for 73.7 percent.

Hubartt, Newcomb, Hollowell and Dominic Cardwell each had five rebounds for HNHS.

The junior varsity Vikings won, 55-45, behind 15 points from Noah Zahn and 12 from Dillon Trout.
