The Huntington North High School girls’ swim team picked up a pair of seconds and a trio of thirds to highlight its performance at the Jay County Swimming and Diving Sectional on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Only first place finishers and those achieving state time standards advance on, along with a limited number of entrants in events where there are still spots open to bring the state meet to 32 entrants in each event.

Senior Allie Aschliman got two of three individual podium finishes for the Lady Vikings, placing runner-up in both the 100-yard butterfly in a new school record and the 100-yard backstroke. She clocked in at :59.33 in the fly, losing by just over a half-second, and came back for a 1:03.48 in the back.

Freshman Mya MacAleese got the remaining individual stand spot, placing third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:14.87.

Both Aschliman and MacAleese were part of the Lady Vikes’ two third-place relay teams as well. Alyssa Brinkman and Laney Shaw joined them in the 200-yard medley relay for a clocking of 2:01.53, and Shaw and Bekah Brunner were the other half of the  third place finishing 400-yard freestyle relay team, with a clocking of 4:00.57.

Led by those finishes the small Lady Viking team managed to place fifth among 13 teams with a score of 190 points. The host school won the meet with 416 points.

MacAleese added a second finals appearance individually, placing sixth in the 200-yard individual medley with a clocking of 2:25.75, and Shaw also had two finals appearances. The senior placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, in :26.93 and got seventh in the 100-yard freestyle in :59.28.

Brinkman placed eighth in the backstroke finals with a clocking of 1:12.04.

Brunner added points for HNHS by placing 10th in the 500-yard freestyle, in 6:23.08, and 15th in the fly, touching in 1:17.01.
