Balanced offensive effort leads Vikes to OT win

A balanced offensive effort lifted the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 70-66 win over visiting North Side in double overtime on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Four players scored in double figures for the Vikings, 4-7. Senior Deven Newcomb led the quartet with 18 points. Senior Jordan Hollowell and sophomore Zach Hubartt each added 15 points while junior Sam Thompson chipped in 12.

Hollowell also corralled 10 rebounds to notch a double-double. His efforts helped the Vikes win the battle of the boards, 46-36.

Huntington North led 16-14 after the first quarter, but fell behind by halftime, 25-23, and trailed 40-34 after three frames. The hosts battled back in the fourth, though, outscoring North Side, 17-11, to deadlock the contest at 51-51. The teams remained tied after the first overtime period, 59-59, but Coach Craig Teagle’s squad pulled away in the second, tallying 11 points while holding the Legends to seven to take the game.

The Vikings shot 23 of 62 from the field for 37 percent and 17 of 27 at the free-throw line for 63 percent.

North Side, 1-8, was paced by Isaiah Moore, who tallied 19 points. Rodney Wilson and Jacob Lambert added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Legends hit 22 of 56 field goal attempts for 39.2 percent and 14 of 19 freebie tries for 73.7 percent.

Huntington North also won the junior varsity contest, 54-38.

The Vikings were led by Dillon Trout and Austin Oswalt, who scored 10 points apiece.
