Aschliman, Shaw propel Lady Vike swimmers to win

A pair of first-place finishes by Allie Aschliman and Laney Shaw propelled the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity swim team to an 85-77 victory over visiting DeKalb on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Aschliman topped the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. The senior won the freestyle in 6:10.84 and the backstroke in 1:10.92. Shaw, also a senior, triumphed in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:36.37 and the 100-yard freestyle in 1:02.54.

Mya MacAleese won the 100-yard breaststroke and placed second in the 50-yard freestyle. The freshman took the breaststroke in 1:19.50 and claimed silver in the freestyle in :27.83.

Bekah Brunner put forth a golden effort in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:18.77. The junior also claimed third in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:46.13.

Brunner and MacAleese teamed up with senior Alyssa Brinkman and freshman Jacee Dammeier to win the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet topped the race in 2:04.75. Another Lady Viking quartet placed third in the race. A foursome consisting of seniors Alayna Stroup and Brenna Mason and juniors Kaylee Levy and Victoria Damsleth-Aalrud stopped the timer in 2:19.83.

The Lady Vikings triumphed in the 200-yard medley relay. A quartet comprised of MacAleese, Brinkman, Aschliman and Shaw won the race in 2:08.99.

Aschliman and Shaw subsequently teamed up with Mason and Brunner to place second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:35.63.

Individually, Brinkman captured second in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She finished the freestyle in 2:30.96 and the backstroke in 1:16.64.

Victoria Damsleth-Aalrud rounded out the team’s top-three finishes with a runner-up showing in the 100 freestyle. The junior clocked in at 1:10.35.

The Huntington North boys’ varsity swim team lost to DeKalb, 78-27.

The Vikings got a pair of wins from Colten Schulte and Jeff Gross. Schulte, a sophomore, topped the 200-yard freestyle in 2:06.89 and the 100-yard freestyle in :55.09. Gross triumphed in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:49.56 and in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:19.89.
