Lady Vikes trounce Southwood

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity basketball team trounced visiting Southwood, winning 52-14 on Saturday, Nov. 16.

A game after holding North Side to just two points, the Lady Vikings’ defense shined once again. Huntington North, 3-0, forced 25 turnovers, which it flipped into 18 points. Of those turnovers, 13 came via steal.

The Lady Vikings were up 11-5 after the first quarter and enjoyed a 29-12 advantage at the half. Coach Matt Hinds’ squad shut out the Lady Knights in third quarter while tossing in seven points, then tallied 16 points in the final frame while holding the visitors to just two.

Offensively, Huntington North was led by Leah Campbell, who tallied 18 points. The sophomore did the balance of her damage from beyond the arc, where she buried 5 of 6 shots.

The Lady Vikings hit 18 of 39 shots from the field for 46.2 percent and 6 of 18 free throw tries for 33.3 percent.

Freshman Taylor Double and sophomore Addy Wiley helped facilitate the Huntington North offense with five and four assists, respectively.

Southwood, 1-2, converted just 5 of 30 field goal attempts for 16.7 percent and 2 of 4 shots at the charity stripe for 50 percent.

The Lady Vikings outrebounded the Lady Knights, 29-19. Wiley grabbed six rebounds for the hosts.

Huntington North also won the junior varsity contest, 27-18.
