HU women start off season with stunner OT win over Indiana Tech

The Huntington University women’s basketball team stunned fourth-ranked Indiana Tech, 79-77, in overtime on Tuesday night, Oct. 29, at Platt Arena.

Sarah Fryman’s basket with 4:02 left in overtime gave HU a 70-68 lead and the Foresters were never topped again in the season-opener for both teams. Fryman hit another fielder about a minute later to give HU its biggest lead of the OT at 75-68, but Indiana Tech clawed to within 78-77 with 24 seconds remaining.

The win was the Foresters’ first over a top-five ranked team since 2015.

Fryman, a senior, led all scorers with 24 points and she added three assists and three steals. Sam Hammel had 12 points, six assists and four steals and Erin Mohr and Sara Doi both added 10 points and three assists.

The Foresters jumped off to a 22-18 lead after the first quarter and went into halftime with a 36-31 lead. Tech narrowed the margin to 51-48 after three quarters and Tech’s Emma Wolfe nailed two free throws with 22 seconds in regulation to knot the score at 66-66 after the first 40 minutes of play.

Alexis Hill and DeAnn Kauffman led Tech with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Wolfe added 12 and Rachel Bell tossed in 10.

The Foresters hit 30 of 72 shots from the field for 41.7 percent and added 16 of 24 at the free-throw line for 66.7 percent. The guests hit 30 of 67 from the field for 44.8 percent and hit 11 of 20 from the foul stripe for 55 percent.

Tech won the battle of the boards, 44-43.
