Wiley heading to state in two races

Addy Wiley captured first place in the 1,600-meter run and third place in the 800-meter run to lead the Huntington North High School girls’ track team to sixth place at the Marion Regional on Tuesday, May 21, at Indiana Wesleyan University.

After winning the 1,600 at the New Haven Sectional in 5:20.35, Wiley reduced her time to 4:55.19 to top the race once again. In the 800, she clocked in at 2:18.47 for her bronze placement.

Behind those top-three finishes, Wiley qualified for the state finals, set for June 1 at Indiana University, in Bloomington.

Wiley also ran a leg of the 1,600-meter relay for the Lady Vikings. The Huntington North quartet, which also featured freshman Regan Slagel, senior Brooke Goodrich and junior Meg McDonald, stopped the timer in 4:20.20, good for the eighth and final scoring spot.

Sophomore Preslee Williams claimed sixth place in high jump, leaping 5-0.

Veronika Russell, a senior, took seventh in pole vault, clearing 9-0.

The Lady Vikes’ 3,200-meter relay squad rounded out the team’s scoring with an eighth-place finish in 10:17.28. The squad was comprised of senior Kyler Hoopingarner, sophomore Adalyn Harvey, junior Kendyl Coles and senior Alena Miller.

Other Huntington North competitors were Goodrich, 10th in the 400-meter dash, 1:02.92; sophomore Hanna Whitney, 10th in the 1,600, 5:36.85; and the 400-meter relay team of senior Peyton Dorsett and sophomores Grace Gross, Lily Clanin and Williams, 14th in :53.17.

Homestead won the regional title with a register of 112. Northrop was runner-up with a tally of 94, followed by Carroll, 66; Wayne, 33; Concordia Lutheran, 30.5; and Huntington North and Bishop Dwenger, which tied for sixth with 23 points apiece. The meet featured 34 teams in all.
