Norwell tops Lady Vikes to take NE8 net crown

The Huntington North High School girls’ varsity tennis team fell to visiting Norwell, 1-4, on Saturday, May 11.

A clash between the top two teams in the Northeast 8 Conference, the Lady Vikings and Lady Knights both entered the contest with 6-0 records in conference action. While the Lady Vikes only recorded one win against their guests, they got edged in contests at third singles and second doubles that narrowly tilted the match in Norwell’s favor.

In the singles contest, junior Emily Daas fought hard in the opening set, ultimately recording a 7-6 win. Her opponent, Dani Gavilanez, bounced back, however, knotting up the contest with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Gavilanez then capped off the comeback with a 6-3 triumph in the third frame.

In the doubles match, senior Crosley Stanley and junior Sydney Smekens played Jordan Page and Tianna Moser to a pair of 6-6 stalemates. Unfortunately for the Huntington North duo, Page and Moser gutted out two tiebreak wins, 7-4 and 7-5, to take the match.

Huntington North’s victory came at first doubles, where senior Macy Wohlford and junior Maisy Kesler dispatched Ashlee Xayyachach and JadeLyn Heyerly-Jones, 6-1, 6-3.
