HU softball team drops very different one-run contests

The Huntington University softball team dropped a pair of very different one-run ballgames to  visiting Bethel on Friday, April 12.

The Foresters lost a 17-16 slugfest and a 2-1 nailbiter to drop to 11-21 on the season, 7-14 in the Crossroads League.

Bethel pushed across two runs in the sixth inning to win the opener. The Pilots tallied eight runs in the third inning and six in the second, while the Foresters returned the six in the fourth and scored six more in the fifth as the teams combined for 31 hits on the day.

Both teams blasted three homers in the contest, with HU’s coming from Karley Blankenship, Paige Eichelberger and Denaia Rice.

Rice, Kennedy Krull and Joelle Beals each banged out two hits, and Sophia Beachy knocked in four runs. Blankenship, Eichelberger and Beals each knocked in two runs.

MacKyndsea Burke took the loss, going the final 3.2 innings and yielding two runs on four hits. Mallory West started and went the first 2.2 innings and yield nine runs, five earned, on eight hits, with three strikeouts and three walks. Anna Weigold went .2 innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits.

Burke came back strong in the nightcap but got tagged for the loss again. This time the frosh yielded only two runs, one earned, on six hits, with five strikeouts and no walks in a complete game.

The Foresters scored their lone run in the seventh inning.

Jada Crofoot had two of the Foresters’ five hits.
