Burke blanks USF as HU splits SB twinbill

Freshman MacKyndsea Burke pitched a complete game shutout in the opener of a doubleheader split for the Huntington University softball team against visiting University of Saint Francis on Monday, April 8.

Burke gave up seven hits and had three strikeouts without a walk in the first win of her collegiate career as HU won the opener, 7-0, before falling in the nightcap, 3-2.

HU is now 10-17 on the season, 6-11 in Crossroads League play.

Burke nursed a 2-0 lead through five innings before HU put up a four-spot in its half of the fifth inning.

The HU offense backed Burke with 11 hits in the game, two each by Denaia Rice, Paige Eichelberger, Jada Crofoot and Joelle Beals.

Cofoot had a pair of runs batted in, and solo RBI went to Karley Blankenship, Kennedy Krull, Kiera Stacy, Beals and Sophia Beachy.

HU was down 3-0 in the nightcap but pushed across two runs in the fifth inning to put the pressure on USF, 16-17 overall.

HU had 10 hits in the nightcap, two each by Eichelberger, Crofoot and Stacy. Beachy and Eichelberger got the RBI.

Meghan Fretz took the loss, yeiding two runs in the first inning and another in the fifth. The sophomore went all seven innings and yielded six hits, with five strikeouts and no walks.
