Cumberlands double dips HU baseball team

The Huntington University baseball team wrapped up a busy weekend with a pair of losses on Saturday, March 2, to host No. 19 University of the Cumberlands, falling 8-5 and 6-4.

The Foresters, 4-5, were actually one out away from winning the first game, but the hosts’ Raudy Martinez blasted a two-run home run to knot things at 5-all. Another homer gave Cumberlands the win.

HU tallied solo runs  in the second, third and sixth innings and scored two runs in the fourth on the way to taking a 5-2 lead. But Cumberland came back with a run in its half of the sixth, got the big homer in the seventh and then rode a three-run shot by Bryan Leef to victory.

Daniel Lichty had two hits and two runs batted in to lead the HU attack in the opener. Gustavo Bonilla also had two hits and Adam Roser added a homer.

Mason Shinabery went the first seven innings for HU, yielding five earned runs on seven hits, with seven strikeouts and three walks. Joey Butz took the loss.

Cumberlands jumped all over HU’s second game starter, Caleb Landrum, in the first inning of the nightcap, getting six runs. HU got three of those runs back in the second inning, but couldn’t manage to add anything more than a solo tally in the seventh.

Landrum was rocked for five runs on three hits, with a walk in two-thirds of an inning of work. Gabe Freeman came in for the next 4.2 frames and yielded one run on three hits, with two strikeouts and four walks, and Adrian Perez threw the final .2.
