Vkiings fall to Archers in OT

The Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team suffered a 61-56 defeat to South Side in overtime on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Huntington University’s Platt Arena.

Playing at Platt Arena as Huntington North’s North Arena was occupied by another event that evening, the Vikings found themselves down early to the Archers, trailing 12-5 after the first quarter. Coach Craig Teagle’s squad bounced back in the second quarter, however, pouring in 21 points while holding South Side to six to seize the lead at 26-20 going into the half. Huntington North kept its foot on the gas in the third, surging ahead by as many as 14 points, 43-29, before settling for a 43-34 advantage at quarter’s end.

The final frame saw momentum swing the Archers’ way. The visitors proceeded to knock down 17 points while holding the Vikings to eight, deadlocking the game at 51-51 and forcing overtime. In the extra period, South Side outscored Huntington North 10-5 to complete the comeback and escape Platt Arena with the win.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Vikings, who slip to 15-4 on the season.

Huntington North was paced by Sawyer Stoltz, who connected on 10 of 14 shots from the field on the way to tallying 22 points, which led all players. The senior forward also corralled seven rebounds to help give the hosts a 28-25 edge on the backboards.

The Vikings got a pair of 13-point efforts from seniors Hank Pulver and Zach Daugherty. Pulver also dished out four assists.

Huntington North shot 45.1 percent from the field on 23 of 51 marksmanship. The squad went a perfect 7 for 7 at the free-throw line.

South Side, 9-6, was led by Austin Jordan and JT Langston, who totaled 20 and 14 points, respectively.

The Archers converted 22 of 46 field goal attempts for 47.8 percent and 9 of 12 freebie tries for 75 percent.

Huntington North edged South Side in the junior varsity matchup, 36-33.

Freshman Zach Hubartt scored a game-high 16 points for the Vikes, who run their record to 14-1.
