HU netmen open spring season by clipping Cornerstone

The Huntington University men’s tennis team opened its spring season with a 5-4 win on Saturday, Feb. 9, over Cornerstone University at Grand Rapids Racquet Club and Fitness.

Trailing 1-2 after the doubles, the Foresters’ singles players got the job done, with four taking straight set wins.

Ignacio Poncio at first singles defeating John Cocoma, 7-5, 6-3; Illia Turaba at second won 6-4, 6-4 over Mateo Jimenez; Luke Buttermore at fifth defeated Nick Kleitch, 6-3, 6-2; and Brody Worl at sixth topped Blaise Eisele, 6-0, 6-2.

Poncio and Mariano Echevarria at first doubles beat Cocoma and Thomas Yacuzio, 8-1.

At third singles, Sebastian Salas lost to Yacuzio, 6-7, 2-6; and Niko Rongos at fourth fell to Aliakesei Kanstansina, 5-7, 4-6.

The HU second doubles tea of Turaba and Salas lost 5-8 to Kanstansina and Jiminez and the third team of Rongos and Buttermore lost to Kleitch and Dan Ribbink, 5-8.
