Richer bomb gives HU thrilling win over MVNU

Senior Maddie Richer hit a three-pointer with 27 seconds left in the game to lead the Huntington University women’s basketball team to a 68-66 win over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Richer’s bucket off a Sam Hammel pass wiped out a 66-64 MVNU lead. The visitors then missed a shot, and Hammel hit one of two free throws to bring the score to its ending point.

HU, 15-10 overall and 8-6 in the Crossroads League, was down by six points with 3:11 left when the Cougars’ Maggie Coblentz hit a fielder. Brooke Saylor cut the margin to just two points with a pair of fielders, the last coming at the 1:15 mark, before Richer stepped up.

Sarah Fryman scored 21 points to lead HU, with Saylor adding 17 points and Richer scoring 16.

Saylor also had 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Taylor Gregory was a thorn in the HU side all day, notching 21 points to match Fryman for game-high and adding a game-high 18 rebounds. She also added four blocks.

Mount Vernon held an 18-15 lead at the first quarter break, but Huntington led at halftime, 37-33. The Foresters went into the final frame on the up side of  53-52 score.

HU hit 26 of 62 shots from the field for 40.3 percent and added 11 of 16 from the charity stripe for 68.8 percent. The Cougars hit 25 of 53 shots from the field for 47.2 percent and added eight successes in nine tries at the stripe for 88.9 percent.
