No. 6 MVNU pulls away from Foresters in second half

The Huntington University men’s basketball team ran out of gas in the second half and wound up an 82-69 loser to visiting sixth-ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The Foresters, 15-11 overall and 5-9 in the Crossroads League, played the Cougars within four points at 41-37 in the first half, but MVNU added a nine-pint differential in the second half to secure their 22nd win in 26 outings this season.

Konner Platt had a game-high 23 points to lead HU, including hitting 5 of 8 from downtown. Caleb Middlesworth added 14 points and Zac Owens tossed in 13.

The Cougars had five players reach double figures, led by Jeremiah Roberts with 21 points. Brett Vipperman had 20 points, Austin Jones notched 13, Jevin Knox had 12 and Isaac White scored 11.

The Foresters hit 24 of 63 shots from the field for 38.1 percent and added 11 of 14 from the free-throw line for 78.6 percent. The Cougars hit 29 of 55 shots from the field for 52.7 percent and added a 12 of 13 effort from the stripe for 92.3 percent.

Middlesworth led HU on the board with nine rebounds, but MVNU dominated to the tune of 39-28.
