Hot shooting, 'D' leads Vikings past Barons

Hot shooting and solid defense enabled the Huntington North High School boys’ basketball team to defeat visiting DeKalb, 63-50, on Saturday, Jan. 26.

The Vikings banged in 26 of 44 shots from the field for 59.1 percent on the night to win for the 13th time in 16 outings this season and improve their record in the Northeast 8 Conference to 4-1.

Trey Williams scored 13 points, Sawyer Stoltz and Zach Daugherty each tallied 12, Hank Pulver notched 10 and Deven Newcomb scored eight for HNHS.

The Vikings jumped out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter and were up 34-21 at halftime. They took a 51-37 lead into the final frame.

Dalton Smith led DeKalb, 5-10, with a game-high 22 points. Caleb Nixon added 10 points for the Barons.

The Vikings owned the rebounding battle, 27-14. Stoltz had a game-high eight and Pulver added sevenn.

Newcomb and Daugherty helped the offense move with five and four assists, respectively.

DeKalb hit 17 of 39 shots from the field for 43.6 percent. The Barons hit 7 of 9 from the foul stripe for 77.8 percent.

The Viking junior varsity also had a hot-shooting night as it won, 52-46, to move to 11-1 on the season.

The JV Vikes hit 20 of 30 shots form the field for 66.7 percent, including 7 of 11 from three-point land.

Aidan Hosler and Sam Thompson each scored 14 points.
