Third-quarter run sparks HU women to win

A 13-4 run at the end of the third quarter proved pivotal for the Huntington University women’s basketball team as it beat visiting Spring Arbor University, 67-55, on Saturday, Jan. 5.

The Foresters were clinging to a two-point lead of 37-35 when they went on their streak. Brooke Saylor scored five points in the paint and Sarah Fryman added a two-pointer and a pair of  three-pointers to push HU to a 50-39 advantage heading into the final frame.

Fryman topped all scorers with 28 points as HU improved to 10-7 overall, 3-3 in Crossroads League play. Saylor and Erin Mohr each scored 12 points.

Sam Hammel tied a career-best with eight assists while swiping four steals.

Gracie Cabana led SAU, 5-13, with 14 points. Anne Marie Wright had 11 points and Rachel Nelson added 10.

The Foresters were on the short end of a 17-15 first quarter score but had tied the game at 27-all by halftime.

HU hit 24 of 48 shots form the field for an even 50 percent and added 16 of 18 from the free-throw line for 88.9 percent. SAU shot 21 of 46 from the field for 46.7 percent and hit 4 of 7 free throw tries for 57.1 percent.

The Foresters won the battle of the boards, 28-23.
