Spring Arbor stops HU men in game's final minutes

The Huntington University men’s basketball team let a small lead get away from it in the game’s final minutes as visiting Spring Arbor topped the Foresters, 61-57 on Saturday, Jan. 5.

Konner Platt’s driving layup with 2:32 left in the game gave HU a 57-54 lead but Spring Arbor’s Tom Hamilton hit a deep triple to knot the score at 57-all with 1:58 remaining. Caleb Middlesworth, who led HU with 19 points, missed a shot, and SAU’s Paul Marandet hit a fielder with 1:11 left to give his squad the advantage. Marandet added two freebies after another HU miss to bring the game to its final score.

Platt had 14 of his 16 points after intermission for HU, which falls to 12-6 on the season, 2-4 in the Crossroads league.

Zac Owens added 12 points for HU.

Marandet led SAU, 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the CL, with 13 points. Brandon Durnell, Hamilton and Luke Barber each scored 12 points.

The Foresters hit 23 of 64 shots from the field for a paltry 35.9 percent. They only went to the free-throw stripe six times and hit four from 66.7 percent.

Spring Arbor hit 24 of 56 shots from the field for 42.9 percent. They added 6 of 7 at the free-throw line for 85.7 percent.

Peyton West led HU on the boards with 10 rebounds. Nick Macon had four steals and Owen, Platt and Macon each had three assists.
