Aschliman, Shaw lead Lady Vike swimmers to first win

Allie Aschliman and Laney Shaw won two races apiece to propel the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity swim team to a 101-62 victory over host Blackford on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

In addition to Aschliman and Shaw’s contributions, the Lady Vikings won all three relay races to record the win, their first of the season against four defeats.

Aschliman, a junior, took the top spot in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle races. She clocked in at 2:20.44 in the 200 and 6:18.27 in the 500.

Shaw, also a junior, put forth her golden efforts in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard freestyle. She won the medley in 2:37.58 and the freestyle in 1:02.49.

Alyssa Brinkman and Macy Lange each logged first and third-place finishes for Huntington North. Brinkman, a junior, was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:17.24, and the bronze finisher in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the timer in :29.96. Lange triumphed in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking it at 1:22.95, and posted her third-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 1:23.98.

In the relays, Brinkman, Aschliman, Shaw and Lange took the 200-yard medley relay in 2:16.20. Shaw, Lange and Brinkman then teamed up with senior Morgan Cogar to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, stopping the timer in 2:00.31. Lastly, Aschliman and Cogar paired up with senior Crosley Stanley and sophomore Bekah Brunner to take the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:50.85.

In individual action, Brunner was a two-time runner-up. The sophomore claimed the second spot in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:19.40 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:25.65.

Stanley and Cogar each recorded second and third-place finishes. Stanley attained second in the 500 freestyle in 8:11.45 and third in the 200 freestyle in 2:57.36. Cogar earned runner-up honors in the 100 freestyle in 1:13.87 and bronze in the 200-yard individual medley in 3:12.25.

Sophomore Kaylee Levy rounded out Huntington North’s top-three finishes with a third-place showing in the 100 backstroke in 1:34.32.
