St. Xavier ruins frosh's big night as HU men fall

Freshman Caleb Middlesworth tossed in 26 points but the Huntington University men’s basketball team fell to visiting St. Xavier, 83-80, on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Middlesworth notched his career-high by hitting 10 of 15 shots from the field, including 3 of 4 from three-point land, and nailing 3 of 4 shots from the foul stripe, but St. Xavier ruined his big night by taking a three-point lead at halftime and being able to hold on at the end.

Tyler Arens added 19 points and Nick Macon had 12 for HU, which falls to 2-1 on the season.

HU led by as many as six points  on three different occasions in the second half. Macon’s three-pointer with 8:08 left in the game put HU on top for the final time at 66-65, but St. Xavier ran off the next five points and was never headed again as the visitors improved to 1-2.

The game featured nine ties.

HU hit only 31 of 73 shots from the field for 42.5 percent and added 11 of 16 from the free-throw line for 68.8 percent.

St. Xavier knocked down 29 fo 63 hots from te field for 46 percent and added 14 of 21 at the free-throw line for 66.7 percent.

Arens added eight rebounds to his stat line but HU was beaten off the boards, 43-19.

Peyton West led HU in assists with four, and Macon had four steals.

St. Xavier had five players in double figures, led by sub Chris Soczek with 15 points. Jack Brody added 13 points, Jack Halverson and Tyler Diehl each tallied 11 and Jaelon Wilson had 10.
