HU spikers close regular season with win

The Huntington University volleyball team closed out the regular season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Bethel College on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Foresters edged the Pilots in the opening set, 25-22. Coach Kyle Shondell’s squad won by a wider margin in the following frame, 25-16, but the visitors countered with a 25-20 triumph in the third frame to keep the match alive. Bethel gave Huntington all it could handle in the fourth set, but the hosts were up for the challenge, ultimately taking the frame 27-25 to win the contest.

The win snaps an eight-match skid for the Foresters, who improve to 10-24, 6-12 in Crossroads League play. They will be the seventh seed in the league tournament and travel to second-seeded University of Saint Francis on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Huntington was led by sophomore Brandy Michie, who registered 18 kills. Sophomore Paige Eakright produced 13 kills while sophomore Lauren Cresse totaled 10. Freshman Hannah Maier supplemented their scoring efforts with three aces.

Sophomore Jenna Tacosik fueled the Forester offense with 41 assists. Senior Breanna Levings chipped in 12 assists.

Defensively, sophomore Ariene Butler raked for 19 digs for the Huntington defense while freshman Lindsay Ingenito had a hand in four blocks.
