HU netmen move on in Crossroads League tournament

The fourth-seeded Huntington University men’s tennis team dispatch fifth-seeded Spring Arbor University, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the Crossroads League Tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Klopfenstein Courts.

With the win, the Foresters, 8-4, advance to the semifinal round, where they will take on top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan University on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Huntington kicked off the match with a 2-1 showing in doubles play. The Foresters’ No. 1 duo of Ignacio Poncio and Niko Rongos defeated Nick Romano and Jonah Engle, 8-6. In the second contest, Illia Turaba and Mariano Echevarria beat Alex Reinbold and Ryan MacLean by a tally of 8-4 for Huntington. The Foresters rounded out doubles play with a 4-8 loss in the third tilt. The pairing of Giovanni Martinez and Sebastian Salas lost to Patrick Doerr and Connor Mogle.

In singles action, Poncio upended Romano, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 1 match. Turaba triumphed over Reinbold at the second spot, 6-2, 6-2, while Salas bested Engle, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, in the fourth contest. Huntington’s lone setback came in third tilt, where Echevarria fell to MacLean, 5-7, 3-6.

The fifth and sixth matches were discontinued after the Foresters picked up their fifth win on the day, which decided the match.
