Columbia City edges HNHS girls' track team

The Huntington North High School girls' varsity track team was edged by host Columbia City, 70-62, on Thursday, April 22

Huntington North picked up five first place finishes in running events and got a pair of victories in the field events.

Natalie Spahr took first in the 1,600-meter run in 5:35.5, while Kayla Schenkel earned the top spot in the 400-meter dash in :63.0. Kayla Patrick took the 800-meter run in 2:30.1.

Cassie Hacker, Lauren Daas, Karson Rowe and Patrick teamed up to win the 3,200-meter relay in 10:01.0.

Schenkel and Daas teamed with Alexis Wygant and Olivia Eckert to bring home the 1,600-meter relay win, in 4:17.4.

Wygant also won the pole vault at 8-6, and Liesl Davenport earned first in the discus with a toss of 127 feet, 5 inches.

Beccca Goodman in the 1600, Olivia Eckert in the 400 and Kaitlyn Teusch in the pole vault gave HNHS 1-2 finishes in those events.

Also getting second place points for the Lady Vikings were Megan Karst, in the 100-meter hurdles, Rachel Herr in the 300-meter hurdles, Kelly Ditzler in the 3,200-meter run and Wygant in the long jump.

Machaela Mertz placed third in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Cassie Hacker and Natalie Spahr took the third spot in the 800 and 3200, respectively, and Jessica Huey in the high jump and Davenport in the shot also picked up thirds.

HNHS won the junior varsity meet, 69-46. Wins were recorded by Robyn Kast in the 1600, Jill Fetters in the 800, Marie Ditlzer in the 3,200 and Katie Shomo in the 300 hurdles. Rachel Herr won the high jump, Alison Henn took the long jump and Onna Doerring won the discus.

Also winning was the 1,600-meter relay team of Nicole Smith, Fetters, Tonya Albertson and Kast.
