Vikings mercy-rule Apaches with late runs

The Huntington North High School varsity baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the final two innings to wax visiting Wabash, 14-4, on Thursday, April 19.

The Vikings, 6-1, turned a 4-1 advantage into a 9-1 lead with five runs in the fifth inning, then after Wabash scored three runs in the top of the sixth, the Vikings came back with another five-spot to end the game on the mercy rule.

Ian McCutcheon, Jarret Gray, Levi Bennett and Zach Daugherty each knocked in two runs for HNHS. Bennett, Daugherty and Dane Fife each had two hits among the Vikings’ nine for the contest, with both of Bennett’s being two-baggers.

Elliott Lesperance picked up the win on the mound with five innings of one-hit, one-run ball, piling up five strikeouts without a walk. Ian Broderick had a rough go in the sixth inning, yielding the Apaches’ three-spot in two-thirds of a frame before Gage Sandlin came in for the final out.
