HU SB gets big win in doubleheader split

The Huntington University softball team split a doubleheader with visiting Goshen College, winning big in the first game, 9-1, before losing the second, 6-1, on Tuesday, April 10.

The Foresters shelled the Maple Leafs in the first game. Coach Doug Gower’s squad banged out 12 hits, logging solo tallies in the first and third innings before countering a Goshen score in the top of the fourth with seven runs in the bottom of the frame to craft an eight-run lead that would end the game after five innings.

Huntington, 14-11, 9-6 in the Crossroads League, was led by freshman Paige Eichelberger, who registered three hits and four runs batted in. Sophomore Abby Keaffaber chipped in two hits and as many RBI to the team’s cause. Freshman Kennedy Krull logged three hits and an RBI while sophomore Casey Lehman produced two base pokes and plated a runner and freshman Sophia Beachy notched a hit and an RBI. Sophomore Joelle Beals scored a team-best two runs.

Lairen Miller earned the win in the circle for the Foresters. The sophomore, 9-2, tossed all five innings, limiting the Maple Leafs to four hits and the one earned run. She struck out three and issued no walks.

The second contest saw Goshen build a 5-0 lead through the first five innings before Huntington finally countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth. That would prove to be all the offense the hosts could muster, though, as the game’s scoring was capped by a Maple Leaf insurance tally in the seventh.
Beals paced the Foresters at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Huntington finished with six hits as a team.

Meghan Fretz took the loss for the Foresters. The freshman, 4-2, allowed four hits and three runs, all unearned, in the game’s first three innings.
