Sophomore Ashley Brown smacked a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Huntington University softball team to a 6-5 win over visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Friday, April 6.

The Foresters, 13-10 overall and 8-5 in the Crossroads League, saw MVNU tie the contest with two runs in the top of the seventh. Brown then notched her first homer of the season and the fourth of her career with one out in the bottom of the frame.

Until Brown’s big moment, Casey Lehman was the HU offensive star of the show with three hits and three runs batted in. Brown finished with two hits, as did Kennedy Krull.

Pitcher Lairen Miller was the beneficiary of Brown’s homer, getting her eighth win while throwing a complete game. Only one of the five runs against her was earned, and she gave up eight hits, with five strikeouts and no walks.

HU scored a pair of runs in the first two innings. The Cougars came back with two in the fourth and both teams scored a run in the fifth.

The loss for MVNU is its first conference defeat of the season, against eight wins. The Cougars are 15-6 overall.

The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to the weather.
