MU shades HU softball team twice

The Huntington University softball team got shaded twice in a doubleheader loss to host Manchester University on Saturday, March 10, falling 6-5 and 12-11.

Manchester won both games in its final at-bat. The Foresters pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh in the opener to tie the contest at 5-5, but the Spartans got one in the bottom of the frame for the win. In the second game, Manchester got a pair in the bottom of the seventh to overcome an 11-10 HU lead.

Casey Lehman, Paige Eichelberger and Abby Keaffaber each had two hits in the opener, with one of Keaffaber’s being a longball.

Reliever Hannah Shoupe took the loss in the circle, giving up the final run in two innings of work, on four hits, with a walk.

The Foresters, 1-5, unloaded for six runs in the second inning of the second game, but still only led 7-5 after two innings. Manchester tallied a single run in the third and two more in the fourth before HU scored a pair in the fifth. Both teams scored two runs in the sixth to see HU up 11-10.

Sophia Beachy had two hits and three runs batted in to lead HU. Eichelberger and Joelle Beals each had two hits and two RBI and Lehman also knocked in two runs.

Shoupe went the first 2.1 innings, yielding 10 hits and three earned runs. Mallory West went the final four frames, yielding three earned runs on eight hits and taking the loss.
