HU baseball team splits pair Friday at tourney

The Huntington University baseball team blew out College of the Ozarks, 13-4, to split a pair of games Friday, March 9, on day one of the Clayton Pfeiffer Memorial Classic in St. Louis.

The Foresters, 2-10, earlier in the day lost to host Missouri Baptist, 8-3.

Adrian Perez hit a three-run home run and had five runs batted in and Nick Davit hit a grand slam to lead the rout against College of the Ozarks.

Perez, a junior from Puerto Rico, went yard in the first inning as the Foresters jumped off to a 4-0 lead. Then in the third Davit, a freshman out of Homestead, knocked in four of the five runs HU put up in the frame for a 9-2 lead.

The beneficiary of the big banging was Connor West, who picked up his first win of the season with six innings of seven hit ball, yielding no earned runs with four strikeouts and three walks.

Jamar Weaver, Perez and Davit each had two of the Foresters nine hits in the contest. Davit’s other hit was a double.

The opening game saw Missouri Baptist sink HU with a five-run fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie.

Daniel Lichty had two of the Foresters’ six hits.

Mason Shinabery took the loss on the mound, going five innings and yielding 11 hits for seven earned runs, with five strikeouts and no walks.
