Forester netmen open spring season with draw

The Huntington University men’s tennis team came back from a doubles deficit to earn a 4-4 tie against visiting Cornerstone University on Saturday, Feb. 24, playing inside at Wildwood Racquet Club in Fort Wayne.

Time ran out on the teams’ reservation with the final match undecided, resulting in the rare tie.

Cornerstone built a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, but the Foresters took three of the five finished singles matches to get the tie, with two being on tie-breakers. Ignacio Poncio at first singles defeated Sam Ottosen, 0-6, 6-2 (10-1), and Rodrigo Manzo downed Austin Hendrick at second singles, 4-6, 6-0 (10-3).

Brody Worl at sixth singles defeated Nick Kleitch, 6-2, 6-0.

Manzo and Giovanni Martinez at second doubles got the lone HU win in the pairs, stopping Aliaksei Kanstantsinau and John Cocoma, 8-3.

Martinez lost to Kanstantsinau at third singles, 3-6, 2-6, and Luke Buttermore at fourth singles fell to Cocoma, 2-6, 0-6.

Poncio and Echevarria at first doubles fell to Ottosen and Hendrick, 7-8, and Buttermore and Vova Kohut lost at third doubles to Dan Ribbink and Kleitch, 3-8.
