Vikings whip Luers in regular-season finale

Mitch Geller and Sawyer Stoltz combined for more points than the entire Bishop Luers team scored on Friday night as the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team whipped the visiting Knights, 61-31, on Friday, Feb. 23.

Geller notched 23 points and Stoltz added 14 for the Vikings, who wrapped up the regular season18-6.

The Vikings pulled out to an 11-6 lead after one quarter of play over the Knights, who finished the regular season 1-20. The Vikings then didn’t give up double figures in points in the final three quarters, leading 30-16 at the half and 44-22 after three quarters.

Geller hit 5 of 7 from the field and 13 of 15 from the free-throw line for his game-high points total. Stoltz knocked in 6 of 8 from the field and 2 of 3 from the stripe.

Joe Stoffel added eight points for the Vikings, who wound up hitting 18 of 38 shots from the field for 47.4 percent and 21 of 24 at the line for 87.4 percent.

Zach Daugherty grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds to pace HNHS to a 38-18 boards advantage. Geller added eight boards and Hank Pulver pulled down seven caroms.

Geller also had a team-high six assists.

John Peterson led Luers with eight points.

The junior varsity Vikings triumphed 57-30 to finish 13-7 on the season.

Adam Zahn and Aidan Hosler each scored 16 to place the JV Vikes.

The Vikings will play the winner of Fort Wayne Wayne and Jay County in the Huntington North Sectional on Friday, March 2.
