Sophomore York has best Viking showing at swim sectional

Nathan York was the only Huntington North boys’ swim team member to make a final at the Warsaw Boys’ Swim Sectional and wound up eighth in the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday, Feb. 17.

York, a sophomore, knocked about four seconds off his seed time on Friday night, Feb. 16, at the preliminaries by grabbing the eighth and last spot in the finals with a time of 1:06.17. He then swam to a time of 1:07.50 to finish eighth in the finals on Saturday.

Ian Deming, of Warsaw, won the event with a time of :53.32.

The Vikings had several competitors make the consolation finals on Saturday, and York had a hand in three of those. The soph took 10th in the 100-yard backstroke, in 1:08.24, and swam legs on the Vikings’ ninth place 400-yard freestyle relay team and their 10th place 200-yard medley relay team.

The freestyle relay team also consisted of junior Keegan Mautz, junior Blayde Marn and senior Conner Mason, and knocked two seconds off its prelim time with a mark of 4:16.09. The medley team also include freshman Cole Davidson, Mautz and Mason and knocked off a second from prelim with a time of 2:02.40.

Also scoring points for HNHS were Mautz and Davidson in the 200-yard individual medley, 10th and 16th, respectively, in 2:20.08 and 2:37.21; Mautz with 15th in the 100-yard freestyle, in :57.32; and senior Reid Dillion in the backstroke, 14th in 1:14.72.

The Vikings as a team placed 11th out of 13 teams, scoring 63 points. Warsaw took the team title with 421 points. Columbia City was second with 315 and Culver Academies was third with 290.
