Free throws lift Vikings to OT win over Concordia Lutheran

Free throws lifted the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 59-54 victory over host Concordia Lutheran in overtime on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

After the two squads played to a 49-49 deadlock in regulation, the Vikings proceeded to hit 8 of 10 shots from the foul line in the bonus period, plus one shot from the floor, to edge the Cadets, who made just three freebies of their own and only 1 of 5 field goal attempts.

Huntington North, 11-3, took a 14-9 lead in the first quarter, but fell behind by halftime, 25-21. The visitors narrowed the deficit to a point after three frames, 38-37, positioning them to tie the game up in the fourth.

The Vikings were led by juniors Zach Daugherty and Trey Williams, who tallied 14 and 13 points, respectively. Senior Joe Stoffel and junior Keegan Bartrom both chipped in nine points.

For the game, Huntington North went 18 of 44 from the field for 40.9 percent and 16 of 22 at the charity stripe for 72.7 percent.

Concordia, 4-7, was paced by Adam Gottschalk, who scored 13 points. Jadon Dance and Brayden Pearson each added 12 points to the team’s cause.

The Cadets shot 40 percent from the floor on 18 of 45 marksmanship and 57.9 percent at the line on an 11 of 19 effort.

The Vikings won the battle of the boards, 36-26. Junior Hank Pulver led the team with 10 rebounds.

Huntington North also won the junior varsity contest, 34-23.

The Vikings, 5-5, got 15 points from sophomore Aidan Hosler, who went a perfect 7 of 7 from the field.
