Vikes hang on to beat Southwood, 49-46

After giving back a 17-point second quarter lead, the Huntington North High School boys’ varsity basketball team hung on for a 49-46 win over visiting Southwood on Friday, Dec. 1.

The Vikings saw a 28-11 advantage late in the second quarter turned into a 34-34 tie by the end of the third frame and had to scramble in the final quarter to improve their record to 3-0 on the season.

Mitch Geller led the way with career highs of 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The senior forward knocked down 7 of 10 shots from the field and 7 of 9 from the free-throw stripe for his big scoring production.

Trey Williams added eight points for the Vikes, who hit 17 of 33 shots from the field for 51.5 percent and 11 of 14 from the stripe for 78.6 percent.

Carson Blair had a game-high 22 points for Southwood, 0-2, and Peyton Trexler added 12.

Southwood shot 17 of 43 from the field for 39.5 percent and added 4 of 9 at the free-throw line for 44.4 percent.

The Vikings won the battle of the boards, 27-20.

The Huntington North junior varsity won, 44-38, to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Jordan Hollowell had 10 points and Adam Zahn, Aidan Hosler and Devin Newcomb each tossed in nine.
