Clarke comes back on HU in second half to win in tourney tilt

A second-half comeback by Clarke University resulted in an 87-79 loss for the Huntington University men’s basketball team on the first day of the Terry Polston Hoops for Hope Tournament on Friday, Nov. 17, at Grace College.

The Foresters enjoyed a 40-35 lead at halftime, but the Pride took control of the game in the second stanza, outscoring Coach Ty Platt’s squad by a double-digit margin, 52-39, to claim the win.

Huntington, 3-4, was paced by sophomore Andrew Yoder, who scored 20 points. Junior Tyler Arens chipped in 18 points and four assists. Senior Mike Bush tallied 16 points and eight assists while senior Devon Merder tossed in 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season.

The Foresters went 27 for 66 from the field for 40.9 percent. They added 14 points in 23 attempts at the free throw line for 60.9 percent.

Clarke, 3-3, got 22 points from Ernest Bolden Jr. Jazz Bajwa, Tyler Meier and Haris Takes each added 15 points to the team’s cause.

The Pride converted 33 of 68 field goal attempts for 48.5 percent and 11 of 14 freebie opportunities for 78.6 percent.

Arens did his part to help stymie Clark’s offense, registering three blocks.

On the boards, Staci Richardson collected 13 rebounds to give the Pride a 45-35 advantage in that department.
