HU women get first win of season

The Huntington University women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 71-66 effort versus visiting Cornerstone University on the first day of the Crossroads League/WHAC Classic on Friday, Nov. 3.

The Foresters, 1-1, led 18-12 after the first quarter and 32-26 at the half. Coach Lori Culler’s squad enjoyed a 47-39 advantage at the end of three frames and led by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter before settling for the five-point triumph.

Sophomore Sarah Fryman led Huntington with 20 points. Junior Brooke Saylor added 12 points and 11 rebounds while junior Casey Morton chipped in 11 points. Freshman Sam Hammel helped facilitate the scoring with five assists.

The Foresters shot 29 of 64 from the field for 45.3 percent and 7 of 8 at the free-throw line for 87.5 percent.

Cornerstone, 0-3, got 20 points from Jesse Sheridan, 13 from Lizzy Otten and 11 from Sydney Muller. Cass Vredevoogd corralled a team-high nine rebounds to give the visitors a 42-33 advantage on the boards.

The Golden Eagles converted 22 of 60 field goal attempts for 36.7 percent and 19 of 21 free-throw opportunities for 90.5 percent.
