HNHS harriers dominate at Marion Sectional

The Huntington North High School boys’ cross country team placed all seven of its runners in the top 14 at the Marion Boys' Cross County Sectional to win the meet in dominant fashion on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Indiana Wesleyan University Course.

Junior Jacob Wust led the Vikings’ impressive contingent, earning runner-up honors in 16:43.7. The team’s next three finishers crossed the end stripe sequentially. Junior Brock Spahr captured eighth in 17:05.4; senior Nolan Young claimed ninth in 17:19.7; and senior Aaron Hendryx took 10th, also in 17:19.7. Junior Drew Davis then placed 12th in 17:27.6 to cap Huntington North’s score at 41.

Wilson and JJ Whicker trailed Davis across the finish line, finishing 13th and 14th, respectively, to round out the Vikings’ strong showing. Wilson, a sophomore, clocked in at 17:29.3 while JJ, a senior, stopped the timer in 17:31.9.

With the sectional title, the Vikings advance to the Marion Regional, set for Saturday, Oct. 14. Joining Huntington North at the regional is Wabash, 72; Oak Hill, 122; Eastbrook, 125; and Southwood, 129.

Teams not advancing include Mississnewa, with 135 points, which was led by top overall finisher Brennan Butche, who turned in a time of 16:17.1. After Mississnewa was Marion, 155; Northfield, 196; Madison Grant, 224; and Blackford, 276.

Butche and the race’s next nine fastest runners whose teams did not advance will move on to the regional as individuals.
