Taylor sneaks past HU men in Crossroads League tennis tourney

Visiting Taylor University got a pair of three-set wins at the last two singles spots and wound up edging the Huntington University men’s tennis team 5-4, in quarterfinal action at the Crossroads League Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Finishing at 10-4 on the season, the third-seeded Foresters held a 4-3 lead with No. 5 and No. 6 singles remaining. Both Forester players, Jacob Shelton at fifth and Brody Worl at sixth, won their first sets, but couldn’t seal the deal as Taylor got the wins.

The Foresters were down 1-2 after doubles play as only the number one team of Ignacio Poncio and Mariano Echevarria were able to win,  beating Alex Jung and Jake Herbruck, 9-8 (7-5). But singles wins by Poncio at first, Rodrigo Manzo at second and Giovanni Martinez at third had HU up.

Poncio beat Christen Jacquottet, 6-2, 6-2; Manzo topped Savador Lo Cascio, 6-1, 6-2; and Martinez pulled out a three-setter over Andre Danelli, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1.

At fourth singles Echevarria lost to Herbruck, 4-6, 5-7; at fifth singles Shelton fell to Stephen All, 6-2, 5-7, 2-6; and at sixth singles Worl lost to Jung, 6-1, 5-7, 3-6.

Manzo and Martinez at second doubles lost to Danelli and Jacquottet, 2-8, and Luke Buttermore and Shelton at third doubles lost to All and Jacob Scott, 6-8.
