Forester netmen edge Goshen

The Huntington University men’s tennis team edged host Goshen College, 5-4, on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Foresters won the first and second matches in doubles play to craft a 2-1 lead and maintained that advantage through singles action to finish the regular season with a mark of 9-3, 7-2 in Crossroads League play.

Huntington’s top doubles duo of juniors Ignacio Poncio and Mariano Echevarria posted an 8-3 win in their match against Juan Miguel Ciudad and Kartikeya Sharma. The Foresters’ second team of junior Giovanni Martinez and sophomore Rodrigo Manzo dispatched Lukas Kanther and Luke Rush, 8-2.

Huntington’s third duo of sophomores Lucas Buttermore and Jacob Shelton fell to Aritha Weerasinghe and Eric Zuercher, 4-8.

In singles action, Poncio was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Zuercher in the first match. The second tilt saw Manzo beat Ciudad, 7-6, 6-4. Shelton then rounded out the Forester victories with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph versus Kanther in the fifth contest.

Huntington sustained a pair of three-set defeats in the fourth and sixth matches. Echevarria lost the No. 4 tilt, 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, to Weerasinghe while sophomore Brody Worl dropped the No. 6 contest to Evan Beck, 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.

A 3-6, 1-6 loss by Martinez to Sharma in the third match rounded out the day.
