Leo hangs 42-12 defeat on Vike gridders

After a competitive first half, the Huntington North High School varsity football team faded in the second and suffered a 42-12 defeat to Leo on Friday, Sept. 29, at Kriegbaum Field.

The opening quarter saw the Vikings produce the game’s first score when quarterback Austin Spahr broke off a 45-yard touchdown run. While the Lions countered with two touchdowns of their own in the second frame, the Vikings remained within striking distance at the half, down 14-6.

The second stanza, however, saw Leo quarterback AJ Restivo attack the Huntington North secondary, tossing two touchdowns in each quarter to give the Lions a commanding 42-6 advantage.

Huntington North running back Mason Landrum brought the game’s scoring to a close in the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown plunge.

With the loss, the Vikings remain winless on the season at 0-7, with an 0-5 mark against Northeast 8 Conference foes.

Huntington North finished with 321 yards on offense, with 271 coming on the ground. Spahr gained 173 of those yards on 23 carries. Landrum added 95 yards on 28 attempts.

Leo tallied 354 yards offensively. The Lions, 5-2, 4-1 in conference, were led by Restivo, who completed 13 of 20 passes for 302 yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Jason Gause hauled in five passes for 185 yards and three scores while wideout Colton Grahovac made three catches for 92 yards and two scores.

The Viking defense was paced by defensive back Kaleb McVoy, who registered four tackles. Senior defensive lineman Colton Hasty logged one sack.
