Depleted Lady Vikes still dominate Blackford Invite

Even without two of its best runners, the Huntington North High School girls’ varsity cross country team still managed to win the Blackford Invitational in dominant fashion on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The Lady Vikings withstood the losses of senior Chloe Scheiber and junior Alena Miller, who were disqualified from the race after being directed the wrong way on the course. In their stead, Hanna Whitney, Kyler Hoopingarner and Emma Melcher posted top-10 finishes to propel Huntington North to first place at the eight-team meet.

Whitney, a freshman, captured third place in 21:01.9. Hoopingarner, a junior, claimed fifth, crossing the finish line in 21:05.9. Melcher, a senior, turned in a time of 21:21.8 to take sixth among team runners.

Sophomore Kendyl Coles and senior Hollyn Anderson capped the Lady Vikings’ score at 42. Coles secured 12th in 22:05.8 while Anderson attained 16th in 22:33.3.

After Huntington North was Mount Vernon, 74; Frankton, 91; Monroe Central, 92; Southern Wells, 124; Elwood, 132; Muncie Burris, 149; and Jay County, 161.
